Specialist Matthew E. Schneider, 23, was found lying on hi 2 CONC s bunk in Ar Ramadi at about 9 p.m. Iraq time, said his father, Andrew Schneider. He was unre 2 CONC sponsive and could not be revived. 2 CONT 2 CONT 2 CONT 2 CONT The Army is investigating the cause of Schneider's death, but his parents say initial lab tes 2 CONC ts reveal Schneider had a heart attack. Army officials would not confirm the cause of Schneid 2 CONC er's death yesterday. 2 CONT 2 CONT Schneider was born with a heart defect called idiopathic hypertrophic subaortic stenosis, sai 2 CONC d his mother, Cynthia Tardiff. The condition causes heart muscle fibers to grow abnormally, w 2 CONC hich can thicken the heart muscle and limit its pumping ability. 2 CONT 2 CONT Schneider was not expected to live through his infant years, Tardiff said. But when Schneide 2 CONC r was 2, his symptoms seemed to disappear and tests on his heart, like electrocardiograms, ca 2 CONC me back normal, she said. 2 CONT 2 CONT Last Sunday, Tardiff received an e-mail from her son, who had been in Iraq for six months wit 2 CONC h the 141st Signal Battalion of the of the 1st Armored Division, a unit based in Wiesbaden, G 2 CONC ermany. Schneider, who loved running and working out at the gym, told her that he was going t 2 CONC o stop running for a little while. He had been caught in a sandstorm while he was running a f 2 CONC ew days earlier, he told her, and he was having trouble breathing. 2 CONT 2 CONT About six hours before he died, Schneider called his father after finishing a run, Tardiff sa 2 CONC id. In a message Schneider left on his father's answering machine early Monday morning, he sa 2 CONC id he was going to take a shower and wished his father a happy birthday. 2 CONT 2 CONT "I love you, and I miss you," he said in the message. "I think about you all the time." 2 CONT 2 CONT Andrew Schneider said his son had been cleared for military service and had not shown symptom 2 CONC s of heart trouble since he was 6 months old. He said he didn't want to speculate whether th 2 CONC e condition caused his son's death. 2 CONT 2 CONT Schneider, who attended Gorham Middle/High School, was a technology guru, which suited him we 2 CONC ll for his work in the 141st Signal Battalion, a support unit that manages communication, inc 2 CONC luding electronic and telephone communication. 2 CONT 2 CONT As a teenager, Schneider knew enough about computers to play pranks on his classmates; they' 2 CONC d find their disc drives opening and closing when they hadn't touched any buttons, their comp 2 CONC uters flicking on and off, said Jackie Corrigan, who taught business and technology classes a 2 CONC t Gorham Middle/High School. 2 CONT 2 CONT "He had a bit of a mischievous side," said Corrigan, who retired in January. "He was devilis 2 CONC h in that way, but never destructive." 2 CONT 2 CONT Schneider's love of computers started early, and during his four years of high school, he too 2 CONC k every class Corrigan offered. He helped teachers and other students with their computers, a 2 CONC nd Corrigan sometimes sent him to help local businesses that were having computer problems, s 2 CONC aid Andrew Schneider. 2 CONT 2 CONT "He was just tremendous," said William Kaczenski, assistant principal at Gorham High. 2 CONT 2 CONT During his senior year, Schneider was one of two students who earned college credit in a comp 2 CONC uter technology course Corrigan introduced. After he graduated in 2001, Schneider attended Ne 2 CONC w Hampshire Community Technical College in Nashua on a scholarship, his father said. 2 CONT 2 CONT But Schneider didn't feel focused; he said he hadn't found his purpose, Tardiff said. Schneid 2 CONC er decided to join the military in October of 2004. 2 CONT 2 CONT In the Army, Schneider shed unwanted extra pounds he'd had since high school, his father said 2 CONC . He felt fit and proud to be in the Army. He was energized to map out his future, and he pla 2 CONC ned to re-enlist and become an information technology specialist, Andrew Schneider said. 2 CONT 2 CONT Schneider was not involved in combat in Iraq; he helped provide frontline soldiers with commu 2 CONC nication support. In his spare time, Schneider set up a wireless network that linked 80 of hi 2 CONC s fellow soldiers with high-speed internet access, Andrew Schneider said. 2 CONT 2 CONT Schneider told his mother that soldiers "feel bad" that Americans at home think the war in Ir 2 CONC aq is "a waste of time and people." Schneider said it made him feel good to help the Iraqis 2 CONC , Tardiff said. 2 CONT 2 CONT In May, Tardiff heard footsteps in the garage of her home in Lunenburg, Vermont. When she sto 2 CONC od to see who was coming, she saw her son in his uniform; he'd come home on leave and wante 2 CONC d to surprise her. 2 CONT 2 CONT "He was so self-confident," she said. "He was a man." 2 CONT 2 CONT She added, "He treated me so nicely on that visit. I'm glad I had that." 2 CONT 2 CONT Schneider is survived by an older sister, Sarah Gray, 27, of Fairfax, Virginia, and three ste 2 CONC pbrothers: David Guenette, 38, of San Francisco, Matthew Guenette, 34, of Madison, Wisconsin 2 CONC , and Martin Guenette, 30, of Providence, Rhode Isalnd. 2 CONT 2 CONT Schneider will be buried at Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia, but the service had no 2 CONC t been scheduled as of last night. 2 CONT 2 CONT 2 CONT 2 CONT -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2 CONT 2 CONT Two Laid to Rest Had Beaten the Odds 2 CONT Baltimore Marine Was on Third Tour; N.H. Williams is survived by his wife, LaStar 2 CONC , and 4-year-old son, Malachi. 2 CONT 2 CONT Williams, a 28-year-old Baltimore native, was dismantling yet another improvised explosive de 2 CONC vice -- a feat for which he had already been awarded a Bronze Star -- in Anbar province on Au 2 CONC gust 24, 2006, when the device exploded, killing him and another soldier. 2 CONT 2 CONT Schneider, a 23-year-old from Gorham, New Hampshire, was relaxing on his bunk in Ramadi whe 2 CONC n he suffered an apparent heart attack August 28, 2006. 2 CONT 2 CONT At services yesterday, Williams's wife, LaStar, and 4-year-old son, Malachi, received a fla 2 CONC g from a Marine sergeant to honor his contributions to the war. As a bugler played taps, fami 2 CONC ly members and friends huddled, never removing their eyes from the flag-draped coffin. 2 CONT 2 CONT "What made me cry is now his son won't have a father, like Dwayne didn't have a father," sai 2 CONC d Melissa Manning, a cousin of Williams's who said their relationship was more like brother a 2 CONC nd sister. "He was trying to be a good dad, and that's what I'm mad about." 2 CONT 2 CONT She said that Williams had grown up in a tough neighborhood in Baltimore but stayed away fro 2 CONC m gangs and drugs because he knew they would interfere with his goals. 2 CONT 2 CONT Although dismantling bombs is among the most dangerous assignments in Iraq, Williams thrive 2 CONC d on it, family members said. He came from a family of military veterans dating to World Wa 2 CONC r I and had long planned to enter the service before enlisting nine years ago. He was on hi 2 CONC s third tour of duty in Iraq, and his family was anticipating his return to the United State 2 CONC s later this month. 2 CONT 2 CONT "I don't support war, so I didn't want him to go," Manning said. "But he thought it would b 2 CONC e a good opportunity to go to school and to see the world and to do something important. That 2 CONC 's the promise that the Marines give." 2 CONT 2 CONT In the face of war, Williams relied on the love of his family and God to stay strong, she sai 2 CONC d. He called his mother every day and wrote lengthy e-mails that were posted on a family We 2 CONC b site. He saved the lives of his comrades at least once, screaming to them to take cover aft 2 CONC er he disconnected one bomb only to find another nearby. 2 CONT 2 CONT "I found another device set as a trap for us. I yelled 'IED' so others could run," he wrote 2 CONC . "Four Marines including myself were within the blast radius of this item. The Lord is good. 2 CONC " 2 CONT 2 CONT An only child, Williams was especially close to his extended family. He lived with Manning fo 2 CONC r two years before being deployed to Iraq, she said. 2 CONT 2 CONT "We liked to joke with each other, go out to eat, go see movies," she said. "He was so gifte 2 CONC d at building things, drawing and all sorts of things. If I needed something fixed, he coul 2 CONC d fix it, and he was so down-to-earth." 2 CONT 2 CONT Less than 30 minutes after Williams was buried, Schneider's family arrived at the same sectio 2 CONC n of the cemetery to bury their son and brother. A Mormon chaplain praised the young man's de 2 CONC sire to help people, whether Americans or Iraqis. 2 CONT 2 CONT "We're here to honor Matthew's devotion to duty," he said. 2 CONT 2 CONT The chaplain told the assembled crowd about a time when Schneider came upon a woman whose pur 2 CONC se had been stolen. Without thinking twice, Schneider went to the nearest ATM and withdrew $2 2 CONC 00 to give to the woman, he said. 2 CONT 2 CONT A technological whiz, Schneider spent his spare time in Iraq setting up high-speed Internet c 2 CONC onnections for about 80 soldiers. His job was to maintain communication with those on the fro 2 CONC nt lines, and he planned to reenlist in the military as an information technology specialist 2 CONC . 2 CONT 2 CONT Williams and Schneider are the 260th and 261st military personnel killed in Iraq to be burie 2 CONC d at Arlington. 2 CONT 2 CONT 2 CONT 2 CONT -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2 CONT Posted: 31 August 2006 Updated: 9 September 2006 Updated: 17 September 2006 2 CONT 2 CONT Age: 23 2 CONT Hometown: Gorham, NH 2 CONT Date of Death: 8/28/2006 2 CONT Incident Location: Ramadi, Iraq 2 CONT Branch of Military: Army 2 CONT Rank: Spc. 2 CONT Unit: 141st Signal Battalion, 1st Armored Division 2 CONT Unit's Base: Wiesbaden, Germany 2 CONT 2 CONT Matthew E. 2 CONT 2 CONT Two Laid to Rest Had Beaten the Odds 2 CONT Baltimore Marine Was on Third Tour; N.H. Soldier Suffered Apparent Heart Attack 2 CONT By Megan Greenwell 2 CONT Courtesy of the Washington Post 2 CONT Friday, September 8, 2006 2 CONT Marine Staff Sergeant Dwayne E. Williams had survived three concussions from dismantling hund 2 CONC reds of roadside bombs in Iraq. Army Specialist Matthew E. Schneider had overcome a heart con 2 CONC dition that a doctor said would kill him before he was a toddler. 2 CONT 2 CONT The Marine and the soldier who were used to beating the odds were buried near each other at A 2 CONC rlington National Cemetery yesterday. 2 CONT 2 CONT Mourners show support during a prayer at the burial of Marine Staff Sergeant Dwayne E. Willia 2 CONC ms, 28, of Baltimore, who died August 24, 2006, while dismantling a roadside bomb, a feat fo 2 CONC r which he had already been awarded a Bronze Star. His job was to maintain communication with those on the fro 2 CONC nt lines, and he planned to reenlist in the military as an information technology specialist. 2 CONT 2 CONT Williams and Schneider are the 260th and 261st military personnel killed in Iraq to be burie 2 CONC d at Arlington. 1 CHAN 2 DATE 5 Mar 2010 3 TIME 18:13:12 0 @I213@ INDI 1 NAME Karen Emelie /Pasanen/ 2 SURN Pasanen 2 GIVN Karen Emelie 1 SEX F 1 BIRT 2 DATE 29 Jul 1947 2 PLAC Fitchburg, ,Ma 1 CHR 2 PLAC Fitchburg, Ma 1 DEAT 2 DATE 22 Nov 2005 2 PLAC Kittery, York, Me 1 BURI 2 DATE Mass 2 PLAC Fitchburg, ,Ma 1 _UID B3C1692B7B102342AF3BBD693D28BB234B25 1 FAMS @F65@ 1 CHAN 2 DATE 25 Feb 2010 3 TIME 16:47:31 0 @I314@ INDI 1 NAME LIVING 1 SEX M 1 _UID B9F0929B439B1C4DA4B81B6BDFCB3B4B2F94 1 FAMC @F65@ 0 @I315@ INDI 1 NAME LIVING 1 SEX M 1 _UID 68B14FFAFBC6254FB6E6D26E0CF87C9B8E19 1 FAMS @F232@ 1 FAMC @F65@ 0 @I316@ INDI 1 NAME LIVING 1 SEX M 1 _UID 63A4D892B476124D92FB3F8CD44C298F2AA9 1 FAMC @F65@ 0 @I361@ INDI 1 NAME LIVING 1 SEX M 1 _UID 4A5084033B2D0548A5F7F13A048B3ED943D3 1 FAMC @F63@ 2 _PRIMARY Y 0 @I374@ INDI 1 NAME Minnie Pearl /Schaff/ 2 SURN Schaff 2 GIVN Minnie Pearl 1 SEX F 1 BIRT 2 DATE 27 Jun 1892 2 PLAC Salem, Olmstead Country, Minnesota 1 DEAT 2 DATE 4 Oct 1972 2 PLAC Madison Heights, Oakland, Michigan, United States 1 BURI 2 PLAC White Chapel Cemetary, Troy, Michigan 1 _UID 6AE7BCD30CA56D41824A13C091837052B4A1 1 FAMS @F138@ 1 NOTE Pearl Minnie /Schaff/ 2 CONT 2 CONT 2 CONT Died of heart Failure 2 CONT 2 CONT Ancestry.com 2 CONT BAKKE , Pearl M 2 CONT Death Date: 04 October 72 Birth Date: 27 06 1892 2 CONT Gender: Female Residence: Royal Oak, Oakland, Michigan 2 CONT Place of Death: Madison Heights, Oakland, Michigan 2 CONT 2 CONT Ancestry.com 2 CONT BAKKE , Pearl M 2 CONT Death Date: 04 October 72 Birth Date: 27 06 1892 2 CONT Gender: Female Residence: Royal Oak, Oakland, Michigan 2 CONT Place of Death: Madison Heights, Oakland, Michigan 2 CONT 2 CONT Pearl Mimmie? The streetcar was at 24th and Camden Avenue in Omaha when h 2 CONC is death occurred. Arterial Schlerosis is noted as a "contributing cause of importance" not r 2 CONC elated to the principal cause of death. 2 CONT According to his death certificate, he was divorced. His former wife was Elsie Christine Olso 2 CONC n, age 52 in 1929, (born 1877) at the time of his death. They had one son, Melvin, who was, a 2 CONC ccording to census data, born in 1904. 2 CONT He is buried in Graceland Park Cemetery, Omaha. 2 CONT Yom Ryerson 2 CONT 2 CONT Anders. Where did Anders get the money to come to America, start a business, and involve hims 2 CONC elf in bringing his brothers and sisters here? 2 CONT Under the system of primogeniture, wherein the oldest son inherits everything, his oldest bro 2 CONC ther Martin would have inherited the farm when his parents died. (His father Anders died in 1 2 CONC 915, mother Bol in 1928.) It appears that this practice was not followed for the Bakke family 2 CONC . 2 CONT The Bakka Farm History, last paragraph of section 25, (p. 16), describes the ownership transf 2 CONC er from Gotskalk (Anders father) to Anders in 1869. Sections 27 and 28 describe the "deeding 2 CONC " to Anders (the immigrant) and later in 1910, to Peder Bakke, the brother who stayed in Norw 2 CONC ay. (p. 80) 2 CONT Tom Ryerson 2 CONT 2 CONT 2 CONT 2 CONT How old was Anders? First, there appears to be discrepancies between the Bakka Farm History ( 2 CONC p. 15) and census and obituary information, which tends to be quite accurate. Section 26 of t 2 CONC he Bakka Farm History shows an 1872 birth date for Anders, but his later census, obituary an 2 CONC d death certificate all indicate that he was born in 1877. 2 CONT Tom Ryerson 2 CONT 2 CONT 2 CONT 2 CONT 1. Why was Anders treated as the oldest son, if he was a year younger than his brother Martin 2 CONC ?How can Anders "receive the deed in 1893" (a year after he emigrated to America and still on 2 CONC ly sixteen years old), another son Peder Anderrson "receive the deed in 1910" and yet the eld 2 CONC er Anders and his wife Bol seem to have remained on the farm until their deaths in 1914 and 1 2 CONC 928? (Section 29, (p. 15) of the Bakka Farm History, second paragraph, reports that Peter And 2 CONC errson sold the farm in 1914 to Olav Andreas Gotskalkson, the grandparents of the current own 2 CONC er Kare Bakke.) 2 CONT Did Anders "possess" the farm to the extent that he could borrow money against it to emigrat 2 CONC e to America, start businesses, own a substantial home, and make trips back to Norway to brin 2 CONC g his brothers and sisters here? 2 CONT 2 CONT Tom Ryerson 2 CONT 2 CONT 2 CONT More Thoughts about Andrew. Anders died on October 29, 1929, Black Tuesday, in the week follo 2 CONC wing Black Thursday, the first day of the Wall Street crash of 1929. After the record- breaki 2 CONC ng fall in stock prices on that fateful Thursday, the following Tuesday, and thereafter, th 2 CONC e market went on to lose 89% of its value by 1932. It was the catastrophic downturn on Blac 2 CONC k Tuesday that precipitated the unprecedented panic and the onset of unbelievable business an 2 CONC d economic collapse. The Dow Jones average (even then the primary market indicator) went fro 2 CONC m a high of 381 (pre-crash) to a low of 41, and did not return to pre-1929 levels until 1954. 2 CONT Black Thursday is also regarded by many as the trigger to a worldwide recession that saw unem 2 CONC ployment rates of 25% which would continue into World War II and the 1940's. 2 CONT Anders appears to have been a successful businessman, who could well have been heavily invest 2 CONC ed in the market. Everyone was doing it in those days. Did the stress of losing a large amoun 2 CONC t of money contribute to his untimely death? 2 CONT Tom Ryerson 1 CHAN 2 DATE 7 Mar 2010 3 TIME 16:59:07 0 @I410@ INDI 1 NAME Vivian Emma /Madalinski/ 2 SURN Madalinski 2 GIVN Vivian Emma 1 SEX F 1 BIRT 2 DATE 13 Jun 1919 2 PLAC Great Falls, Cascade, Montana, United States 1 DEAT 2 DATE 22 Jan 1978 2 PLAC Marquette, Michigan, United States 1 BURI 2 PLAC St. Mary's Church, Glenwood Cemetary 1 _UID D7F1DAAA1DAF6143ACAD840B2C835258FDC2 1 FAMS @F206@ 1 FAMC @F138@ 2 _PRIMARY Y 1 NOTE Vivian changed the spelling of her name to "Vivianne" reported by her aunt Clara Fisher Schaf 2 CONC f. 2 CONT 2 CONT 2 CONT Vivian was trreated for psophrenia with electric shock treatment 2 CONT 2 CONT Vivian Bakke; died of Cancer 2 CONT 2 CONT BORN 1929? 2 CONT 2 CONT death certificate 2 CONT cause of death 2 CONT ASHD 2 CONT bone cancer 2 CONT Emphysema 2 CONT 2 CONT was living at 2 CONT 33042 alamo court? 2 CONT westland, MI 48185 1 CHAN 2 DATE 5 Mar 2010 3 TIME 17:57:36 0 @I437@ INDI 1 NAME Mortein (Martin) /Bakke/ 2 SURN Bakke 2 GIVN Mortein (Martin) 1 SEX M 1 BIRT 2 DATE 19 Feb 1876 2 PLAC Norway 1 DEAT 2 DATE 10 Aug 1948 2 PLAC Forest City, Howard, Iowa, United States 1 _UID C379A43D0683614EAE406E8DC4B95862759B 1 FAMS @F238@ 1 FAMC @F124@ 2 _PRIMARY Y 1 NOTE immigrated 1895 2 CONT 2 CONT Mortein (Martin) /Bakke/ 2 CONT 2 CONT Martin (Mortein) Bakke; emigrated to America 2 CONT 2 CONT Martin (Mortein) Bakke, Feb 19, 1876 - August 10, 1948 2 CONT Farmed near Forest City, Iowa. Around 1914 the 2 CONC y adopted Hilda Bakke, the daughter of Hattie's sister Ragnhild who lived in Norway. During 1 2 CONC 916 John and Hattie packed up their family and moved to Winnebago County, Iowa. John bought a 2 CONC n 80 acre farm around Leland, Iowa. A few years later he paid it off, and used the collatera 2 CONC l to buy an additional 80 acres. When the Great Depression hit he lost it all. After that h 2 CONC e rented farms and worked as a barber and in a meat market. The rest of their children were b 2 CONC orn in Winnebago County. 2 CONT All of the children were confirmed at the Bethel Lutheran Church outside Vinje, Iowa. In 194 2 CONC 5 John retired to Scarville. Hattie passed away on November 18,1951. Hattie and John had already moved to Winnebago County, and brother Martin liv 2 CONC ed there also, so staying close to family members seems to have been important. 2 CONT The Great Depression and another tragedy marked their lives in the 1930's. According to old c 2 CONC ourt records, Tom and Lena ended up in court for non-payment of farm rent in 1934, and were p 2 CONC robably forced off their farm west of Forest City. This event happened late in the farmer's " 2 CONC rent cycle" of March 1 to March 1, and they, therefore, probably lost their meager livelihoo 2 CONC d at that time. (They were kicked off the farm in February - too late to rent another farm fo 2 CONC r that year.) Whatever livestock, farm equipment or other assets they owned were probably sol 2 CONC d at auction and applied to back rent owed. The winter of 1936 was very cold and produced th 2 CONC e most snow (breaking many records for both snow and low temperatures which still stand.) So 2 CONC n Alvin once shared that at that time he got a job helping a rural mail carrier deliver his m 2 CONC ail. The roads were impassible by car, so they delivered mail as best they could by horse. H 2 CONC e said that this job provided the only income the family had that winter. 2 CONT In the winter of 1937, their house burned to the ground, and they lost everything except fo 2 CONC r a few items on a porch. 2 CONT 2 CONT They lived in the Forest City area until 1940 when they moved to Fertile to live and work wit 2 CONC h son Ray, who owned a "produce" business - buying chickens and eggs from farmers.
